On Wednesday 18 January Elizabeth Farrelly will launch her new party’s water policy at Sydney’s Sustainable House in Chippendale, Sydney.
The party, Elizabeth Farrelly Independents, is running for seats in the NSW Upper House in the state election to be held on Saturday 25 March 2023.
Anyone may come and join the conversation. To reserve a place you may book here.
In perhaps a first for election events “guests are most welcome to take home a free bag of Chippendale street garden compost”.
The FAQs on the website answer various questions and here are two questions and answers:
“Has an independent ever been elected to the NSW Upper House?
In a word, no. The NSW electoral system is stacked against independents in many ways – with lower donation caps making an already-tilted playing field still more difficult. But in the Upper House it’s worse again, since an Independent (or even a group) does not get their name above the line on the mile-long ballot paper. Only a party with a full ticket of 15 candidates is named above the line.”
And,
“Is it true you could take the balance of power away from Mark Latham and One Nation?
Mark Latham is not due to stand for re-election to the Upper House until 2029. However, he has signalled that he might resign from parliament and then stand again in the upcoming March election to try to get another One Nation party member into the Upper House. If more people vote for Elizabeth Farrelly Independents than vote for One Nation – and preference other progressive parties, it is possible that two of our candidates could win Mark Latham’s vacated seat and replace another conservative candidate, thereby taking the balance of power from One Nation and other conservative minor parties.”
I hope to see you there and to share the discussion on the draft policy.
Please note: it’s essential to RSVP as numbers are limited to fit in the terrace house.
Thank you.
Michael
